Topics & Questions for Discussion: Part 1 Sample Responses

After watching the first part of the God as we understand Him movie, we suggest the following topic of discussion:

What were your first impressions of A.A. or other 12 Step meetings?

Sample Response by facilitator or group mediator:

The first section of the movie asks AA members about their first impressions of Twelve Step meetings. It is common for newcomers to feel that the meetings are religious in nature. Some even come to the conclusion that Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Alanon, and other 12 Step recovery fellowships are a religion or a religious cult.

A person who walks into an AA, NA, OA, or other 12 step meeting room for the first time carries with them all of their life’s experiences, including their experiences with religion. Maybe they were raised Christian or Catholic or Jewish, and maybe they’ve since rejected their religion of birth and consider themselves Atheist or Agnostic or Buddhist or Muslim or Hindu.

Generally speaking, for people who reject religion, the Twelve Step meetings can be a big turn off. In the next sections of the video, we’ll find out why people might storm out of that first Narcotics Anonymous meeting.
